Texting in a Foreign Language

In recent years, she has acquired several Asian flute students. Sometimes they barely speak English. Of course music is the universal language, true enough. Still it's tricky if the student doesn't understand the instructions.

No matter. My Korean student this morning has been in the USA for maybe a year, or not quite. I asked her how come her language skills have improved so much when it's summer, no school. At home, for sure there's no English.

Answer? I've been texting!

So how cool is that? Texting has a bad reputation, and for good reason, no doubt. BUT . . . In its defense, there is no denying that a good dose of texting in one's 2nd language can bring skills way up, rapidly.

At least, that's my latest observation.
